SEVA
Seva is a Sanskrit word translating directly to “string”, implying that all things are connected in the thread of existence. To engage with one is to engage with the whole. Likewise, to serve one is to serve the whole. In its current use, Seva is the spiritual practice of selfless service, stemming from two forms of yoga, Karma Yoga, which is the yoga of action, and Bhakti Yoga, the yoga of worship inspired by divine love. Acts of Seva take on many forms, as simple as smiling at a stranger on the street, or by taking a more active role by volunteering at a local animal shelter, or traveling the world to help children in need.
Urban Flow Yoga’s owner, Jennifer Wagner, believes SEVA in an integral part of her yoga practice, taking her yoga off the mat and into the world. Inspired by the conscious activism of Seane Corn, she has taken on The SEVA CHALLENGE, dedicating to raise $20,000 this year for The Cambodian Children’s Fund. Please visit www.sevachallenge.com for details about this inspiring organization, a full list of events, and to find out how you can help.
As a part of this project, Urban Flow Yoga offers a DONATION based yoga class every Friday from 4-5:15pm. All donations will be sent directly to The Cambodian Children’s Fund. This not only provides an opportunity to give back, but allows for practitioners, who may not have funding for yoga, to practice at a cost that is feasible for their budget. A FREE beginner class is also offered every Saturday from 2-3pm. Anyone may attend this class as often as they like.
On a local level, Jennifer practices SEVA by teaching yoga to children and adolescents with severe emotional and behavioral disturbances. The practice of yoga helps them learn mindfulness, create a sense of peace within themselves, build self esteem, and find a connection with others.
Please contact Jennifer Wagner at jennifer@urbanflowyoga.net if you would like to be a part of our SEVA team.
